In the kitchen:
  • Show how you separate fruits and vegetables, talk about it, and let your child help.
  • Take out the pots and pans and a wooden spoon and let them hear the different sounds of percussion instruments.
  • Let your child help prepare a meal; they can do simple tasks such as take things out of the cabinets or pour stuff into a bowl. And when they help cook, they’ll probably eat the food.
  • Alphabet magnets on your refrigerator can be used for to talk about things that start with a particular letter; for example, foods that start with the letter “G.”

Shopping:
  • Talk about what you are looking for and have your child participate in looking with you.
  • Look for shapes, colors, types of objects, and specific foods.
  • Have your child hand money to the cashier; they’ll begin to understand money and they’ll love paying for things.
In the car:
  • Look for shapes, colors, types of objects, and signs out the window.
  • Play “I spy,” where one person sees something and people have to guess what it is by asking “yes or no” questions; e.g. Is it alive? Is it blue?
  • Sing songs and nursery rhymes.
  • Talk about your day.
  • Play the alphabet game where everyone in the car calls out letters of the alphabet in order as they see them on signs and license plates.
  • Discuss what a red light, yellow light and green light mean.
  • Talk about safety and using your seat belt.
  • When you put money in the meter, stop at the stop sign and obey traffic rules, talk about and let them be part of it so they learn about good citizenship.
At meals:
  • Talk about the day’s events.
  • Share stories.
  • Teach manners: saying please and thank you, wiping their mouth, chewing with their mouth closed.
  • Explore new textures, colors and tastes. Talk about the food and how it feels, looks and tastes.
Doing laundry:
  • Have your child help you sort colors, sort like items, match socks.
  • Play with the basket in the laundry room for younger ones – hide and seek or take a ride.
At bedtime:
  • Read books together. This is really important!
  • Share stories about your day or make up stories together.
  • Brush your teeth with your child so they learn good habits.

re: No.2... about Content and Context ... that i THOUGHT i know ... but this time in a very different sense ... so still i have much to know ...

so sambung conversation with Lady Wife and Gentleman Husband ...

i brought up CONTEXT with respect to our discussion of our characters ... that different contexts may require us to put on different robes ...

then i said ...
 i just got to know a lady ... despite two separations ... she is not down ...

the Gentleman Husband immediately responded ...

now ... "two separations" is CONTENT ... and "she is not down" is CONTEXT ...

and till now ... i'm still mulling over this statement ... 

... and may revisit this in the spring "of mind" ...

Jewel in the stream Part 2 ...


The JEWEL ... 

you are a jewel ... the lady wife concluded, after i submitted to her test ... 

... masyaAllah sure i know i  am the jewel ... i am my father's jewel (i always feel my younger brother is my mother's jewel ... there ... siblings rivalry for you) ... i replied with a laughed ...

but i am sure you have something else in mind right ... i probed ...

your being a jewel here means you are a left brain thinker ... the gentleman husband explained

oh okay ... logical, analytical thinker you mean ... i  responded ...

so what does that mean to you ... i asked

that means you are methodological and systematic in your life  ... you know what you want to do and how to do it ... you know where you want to go ... you prefer to do things yourself rather than get it done through someone who will not do it the way you want it done ... you are a perfectionist ... the characteristics of a Jewel

ho ho ho ... this tells me i am a very bad manager ... because i can't delegate things ... i laughed ...

... but i want to be a flower ... i laughed again ... (while remembering the rose that dear MP has bestowed in me)

and i love the stream ... why can't i be the stream ... and what does a stream mean ... i asked ... (cikgu cakap double-barreled question ni)

definitely i am not the shaker ... that i know ... because i know i can't lead despite being born first ... but i know i am good at supporting ... i elaborated for them further ...

okay ... let us check your secondary character ...

i want to be the flower ... the flower ... i jokingly said ...

... your secondary character is the stream ... also a left brain thinker ... the  lady wife said after another round of tests ...

similar to Jewel ... they have focus ... directed flow ... the gentleman husband explained ...

okay... then ...

i am a JEWEL IN THE STREAM ... i concluded with a laugh ...

~

now friends ... you must forgive me if this sound familiar to you ... but this is my first encounter of this kind of interpretation about the self ...

i am familiar with the ...

of  ... Activist ... Reflector ...Theorist ... Pragmatist 

and Briggs-Myer Personality Test that i was subjected to when i applied to work in a company

 and other team compatibility test etc. etc ...

~

but i like this method of characterising one self ... based upon nature ... and natural objects ...

Shaker ... Flower ... Jewel ... Stream

~

Still i know very little about this ... but it was a lovely conversation ...

with a couple interested in helping people identify their strengths and weaknesses for a better and holistic person ...

~

dear friends ...  my conclusion

our strengths are in "what we are" which we can use to excel ... and our gaps are in "what we wish to be" which we can learn to bridge ...

No.2... about Content and Context ... that i THOUGHT i know ... but this time in a very different sense ... so still i have much to know ...

and

No.3... that we can develop positive atmospheres by uttering words for positive responses or results ... this also i thought i know ... but now i am learning to know how real this is ...

i hear something else ...

bibikkk ... bibikkk ... sakit bikkk ...

i see wanita bibik memegang tangan seorang wanita tua terbaring di katilnya ... 

one hand membelai lembut ... kepala ibu tua ... another hand pressing her ...

kaklong tak balik hari ni bikkk ... tanya ibu tua ...

tidak ibu ... kan semalam kaklong telepon ... ibu lupe ye  ...

kaklong cakap semalam, ada urusan hujung minggu ini maka tak dapat balik ... wanita bibik mengingatkan ...

yelah ... minggu lepas pun kaklong ada urusan 

dan minggu sebelum nye pun begitu juga ...

sibuk kaklong setiap minggu ... tutur ibu tua perlahan seolah berbicara hanya untuk dirinya ...

ye ibu ... dia punya tugas besar ...

... kan bibik ada dengan ibu ... pujuk wanita bibik ...

~

it is not the crying and the sedu sedan anak di surau yang membuat diri ini sedih ... it is this vision of the future that renders my heart broken ...

because as i saw the child hugging and calling out for wanita bibik and baba ... i also see ... mama losing her child ...

Anak siapakah ini Part 2 ...


... and as i watched the wanita "bibik" and the child ... i looked around ...

trying to guess who among them was the mother that deserved the accolade "mama" ...

i looked and each one looked back ... senyum berbalas senyum ...

still i was not sure which ...

i got up and out of the surau ... to the car ... waiting for centa hati oghang besar dighumah selesai solat ...

then i  saw them ... wanita "bibik"  holding the child ... the child hugging her  back tightly ... and "mama" in tow ... an elegant lady ... moving towards an equally elegant car ...

i remembered ... that she was the lady next to the wanita "bibik" ...

and i remembered thinking ... tidak tersentuh kah hati ibu ini ... apabila anak itu tersedu sedan memeluk dan mendayu dayu memanggil  ... bibikkkk ... babaaaa .... bibikkk ...

and NOT ... mamaaa ...

~

 ohhhh ... sedihku masih belum berlalu ... that child's voice is still ringing in my ears ...

 ~

on the way to visit a very very dear friend last night ...

adinda Hajjah R from Brunei ... who was here to consult with her cikgu supervisor in a local university ...

it was maghrib time ... so we (self & oghang besar dighumah) stopped at the rest area to do solat ...

as i was praying ... terdengar anak ini merengek, merayu-rayu next to me ... she was holding onto the knees of a lady standing for solat ... 

bibikkk ... bibikkk ... nak airrrrr ... bibikkkkkk ...
berrrr ulang  kali ...

sekejap sekejap .... babaaaaa ....sambil ter sedu sedu ... babaaaaa
bibikkk ... bibiikkkkkk ... babaaaa

wanita yang dipegang anak itu terus bersolat ...  rukuk ... sujud ... berdiri semula ... dalam sedu dan rengekan ... sambil mencari-cari ruang untuk sujud di atas sajada yang di occupied oleh anak itu ...

sehingga selesai ...

saya pun selesai solat ... kawan-kawan ingat tahap mana lah khusuk solat malam tu ye ...

usai solat ... saya toleh ... she was on my left ... ku lihat  wanita itu merangkulnye dengan lembut ...
she went quiet ... dibelai rambutnye yang kerinting (imagine maggi mee) ... masyaAllah comelll sangat anak ini ...

anak siapakah ini ... my inner voice asked ... i suddenly felt sad ... kenapa tidak ...

mamaaa ... mamaaa ... mamaaa

Bangau ...






jumpe kenalan baru hari ni ...

as we were sitting there having midmorning lunch ... i listened

and listened ... and listened

it is very hard actually to just listen ...

it is in our nature to want to listen to our own sweet voice ...

to how good we are about things ...

so to listen is a skill that need to be acquired ...

it is tough ... it needs practice ...  plenty of practice

consciously pressing the lips together while letting the other speaks ...

so i pressed my lips together ... with a word here and there ... nothing intrusive ... just to clarify ...

and i learned ...

about her achievements to date ... her numerous phases of pains before ... her aspirations for her future ...

~

no ... i was not doing any research about her ...
  and by the time we were done ... it was about 3 plus hours later ...

~

  and among her favourite phrases was ...

jangan nak bangau kan orang ...

this is to be understood in context with the "bangau oh bangau" song of passing the blame ...

I like this ... :)

Archeology of pain ...

dear friends ...

obviously (obvious kan my second cikgu would query) the above is due to my love for words ...

i am still with Freire (Pedagogy of Hope) here ... this gentleman's writing kena baca ... letak balik ... baca something else ... ambil balik baca ... begitulah berulang kali ...

the reason is he writes from his heart pushed by his varied experiences while guided by his intellectual  framework ...

lots and lots of metaphors ... he takes the words and the pain of the common population as a basis for his transformational thoughts ...

he takes his own pain ... emotional pain ... to explain how to delve into the "whys" of things ...

as in this following words :

" I dug up the archaeology of my pain" (p.30)

... i learned something from Freire today ...

Freire is known for his educational thoughts, propositions and practice ... but if we read his book - Pedagogy of Hope ... we will realize ... that events and circumstances shaped his work ... it is not about his qualifications in academics ... rather his qualifications in real life ... 
academic qualification is just the icing ...

Bully ...

... many ways we got bullied in life i am sure ...

emotionally ... mentally ... physically

but i like this girl's way of handling her tormenter

... let me set the scene ...

... ni di west midlands uk ye ...

i was in the library ... biasa lah sambil buat ape yang perlu ... buat juge ape yang tak perlu ...

from where i was sitting i could watch a group of kindergarten children taking a break outside ...

and i saw this hero macam dalam filem hindustan ... very small version ...

agaknye pekenan dengan girl cute macam MP masa kecik-kecik ni ... i knew she was the daughter of a brunei officer studying in the same uni.

and he kejar-kejar her ... pusing-pusing ... si comel tu pun lari-lari ... mencik lah agaknye ... he he 

anak omputih lain tu dia tak kejar pun ... si comel melayu ni juge yang di pekenannye ...

dah agaknye penat ... instead of lari ... she made a sudden TURNAROUND and CEKAK her pinggang and looked at her tormenter ... ape lah yang di katenye tak lah pule dapat di dengar ...

but i could see her tormenter slowly backing off and withdrew ...

he he he ... yesss ... that's my kind of girl ...

sunday ... jumpe kenalan lama ... husband a retired army officer and his peramah wife ...

kami di sekolah pondok ... di Kedah past 3 months she jawab ...

they look very very happy ...

she used to be quite sick ... now more relaxed alhamduLillah ...

Husband was particularly excited and happy to show the pondok (photo in his tel) where they are staying ...

... for the first time ... i saw a pondok wakaf untuk mereka-mereka yang mencari ilmu  ...

i tried to google an image of similar pondok ... tak jumpe ... their pondok is about triple the size of the pondok as illustrated below ...
