Islam In Japan

There are isolated records of contact between Islam and Japan before the opening of the country in 1853; some Muslims did arrive in earlier centuries. Among the first recorded contacts was when a Portuguese ship which sailed from Malacca in 1555 and among its passengers was an Arab who began to preach to the Japanese.

The first modern Muslim contacts were with Malays who served aboard British and Dutch ships in the late 19th century. In the late 1870s, the life of Prophet Muhammad was translated into Japanese. This helped Islam spread and reach the Japanese people, but only as a part of the history of cultures.
Another important contact was made in 1890 when the Ottoman Empire dispatched a naval vessel to Japan for the purpose of saluting the visit of Japanese Prince Komatsu Akihito to Constantinople several years earlier. This frigate was called the Ertugrul, and was destroyed in a storm along the coast of Wakayama Prefecture on the evening of September 16, 1890.

The first Japanese to go on the Hajj was Kotaro Yamaoka. He converted to Islam in 1909 in Bombay, after coming into contact with Russian-born writer, Abdürreşid İbrahim, whereupon he took the name Omar Yamaoka. Both were traveling with the support of nationalistic Japanese groups like the Black Dragon Society (Kokuryūkai), Yamaoka in fact had been with the intelligence service in Manchuria since the Russo-Japanese war. His official reason for travelling was to seek the Sultan's approval for building a mosque in Tokyo (completed 1938). This approval, granted 1910, was necessary as Sultan Abdülhamid II of the Ottoman Empire was the Khalifah of Islam and Ameerul Mu'mineen (the leader of all Muslims).

Another early Japanese convert was Bunpachiro Ariga, who about the same time went to India for trading purposes and converted to Islam under the influence of local Muslims there, and subsequently took the name Ahmed Ariga.

Yamada Toajiro was from 1892 for almost twenty years the only resident Japanese trader in Istanbul.[1] During this time he served unofficially as consul. He converted to Islam, and took the name Abdul Khalil, and made a pilgrimage to Mecca on his way home.

The real Muslim community life however did not start until the arrival of several hundred Turko-Tatar Muslim refugees from Central Asia and Russia in the wake of the October Revolution. These Muslims, who were given asylum, in Japan settled in several main cities around Japan and formed small communities. They are estimated at less than 600 in 1938 for Japan proper, a few thousand on the continent. Some Japanese converted to Islam through the contact with these Muslims.

The Kobe Mosque was built in 1935 with the support of the Turko-tatar community of traders there. The Tokyo Mosque, planned since 1908 was finally completed in 1938, with generous financial support from the zaibatsu. Its first imams were Abdürreşid İbrahim (1857–1944), who had returned in 1938, and Abdulhay Qorbangali (1889–1972). Japanese Muslims played little role in building these mosques.

 Tokyo Mosque in Yoyogi

There are currently between 30 and 40 single-story mosques in Japan, plus another 100 or more apartment rooms set aside, in the absence of more suitable facilities, for prayers. Many Muslim communities have plans to build mosques in the near future.

Mohammad, 38, runs an Asian grocery store in Tsunashima, Yokohama. The Sri Lankan had 520,000 yen in savings, and was thinking of donating 300,000 yen towards the purchase of the mosque. He changed his mind and donated 500,000 yen, virtually emptying his account.

He says: "When you make a contribution to a mosque, God prepares a house for you in heaven. It's thanks to God that I've been able to make my way in Japan up to now. And God will continue to help me in future."

Mohammed, the seventh-century founder of Islam, was a merchant of Mecca, and many passages in the Koran reflect a merchant's manner of thinking -- as, for example: "Who is there who will lend a good loan to God? For He will double it for him, and for him is a generous reward."

The deadline for payment of the 90 million yen was 11 am July 20. On July 10, the community was still 5 million yen short. Iqbal worked the phones, contacting foreign Muslims all over Japan. On the morning of July 20, 2 million yen arrived in cash. That, plus contributions forwarded directly to a special bank account, just made up the required amount.

In Nagoya, local foreign Muslims, most of them used car dealers, got together and purchased for 46 million yen a suburban building that had previously been a clothing store, turning it into the Nagoya Port Mosque, which opened last autumn.

"Wherever in the world Muslims live, it's only natural that there be a mosque," says Hanif, a 36-year-old Sri Lankan. - See more at: http://www.japanfocus.org/-kawakami-yasunori/2436#sthash.oQqnTReT.dpuf

just in case ada rezeki ke sana ... here is the List of Mosques in Japan ...

~
teringat one lecture in which Cikgu Professor said ...2 things you must immediately do when you take up a posting or residence in a village ... first meet the local headman ... second go to the mosque ...

till now i have kept his advice in mind ... not the first one but ... where ever i've gone, the first thing i would look for after settling down was to look up the mosque ... it helped a lot to calm your heart in strange and new places ... AlhamduLiLLAh

... except in the Midlands UK where women were not encouraged to go to mosque (mostly built by the Gujeratis and the Pakistanis) ... forgive me if i have issues with this actually ... i always question why you would allow women to go to the market, shopping malls etc ... but not to the mosques?
Okay ... at least establish an Islamic Centre for women then ...

Inna Lillahi wainna ilaihi rajiuun ...

Assalamualaikum wbt,

Allah SWT mengingatkan kita ... apabila di timpa musibah kita ucaplah ...
Inna Lillahi wainna ilaihi rajiuun ...
~
10 June 2013 about 12:15pm ...

(now i understand the meaning of subjective loss ... maybe:)

the moment it disappeared from where i have just placed it ... my heart dropped ... and i said innaLiLLAHi wainna iLaihi rajiuun ... terus ke security buat report ...
~
... terus ke bank ... cancelled all bank cards
called last person for whom i have written a cheque for details
cancelled all unused cheques
got new cheque book
tanya procedure for new cards ... officer kata ...bank perlu mycard ... kalau pergi Pejabat Pendaftaran Seremban insyaAllah 2 jam boleh dapat Mycard baru ... wahai memang diri ini akan diuji ... cerita seterusnya nanti ...
other bank ... telephone je to cancel the bank cards ..
~
 terus ke balai polis
report loss
report contents of handbag ...
AlhamduLillah ... tunjuk laporan polis ... isi form ... okay check ibujari kanan okay diterima ... now check ibujari kiri ... sekali ... sekali lagi ... sekaliii lagi ... wahai kenapa tak padan padan ni ...
officer tu lelaki so he minta tolong rakankerjanya sebelah seorang wanita tolong buatkan untuk akak ni katanya ... mula mula tak faham juga kenapa he passed me to the lady then bila lady tu pegang jari adjust situ sikit, sini sikit nak bagi best capture image ibujariku itu baru faham kenapa he passed me to his lady colleague ... hai slow betulkan saya ni ...
tak boleh padan juga image ibujari kiri ni ... so saya tinjau komputer nya ... kenapa ye saya tanya ... laa rupanya tengah tengah jari tu dah tak ada image sikit ... kosong ... laa mana perginya garisan tu ...
ke dah tanda tanda nak meninggal dunia ke saya tanya officer tu sambil gelak lah tu ... saya ni perangai macam ni lah kalau sediiiih sangat buat lawak bodoh je yang pandai ... syukur banyak Allah bagi sabar ni ...
tidaklah puan kata officer tu ... ramai juga yang macam ni ... yang muda muda pun ramai sambungnya (mengiye kan saya dah tua lah ni haha) ... sebab saya kata mungkin dah tua kut hehe ...
tak ape tak ape ...
in which case kami kena hantar ke Putrajaya application puan ni ... so dalam 2 minggu insyaAllah baru boleh siap mykad baru ...
laaa ... dari 2 jam ... ke 2 minggu ? macam mana tu ... tak ape tak ape ... sabar ...
ambil gambar itu ini selesai urusan ...
tanya pula ... boleh ke bank terima dokumen sementara ni untuk buat bank card ... i called our bank officer and passed her on to the Pendaftaran officer ... cakap cakap cakap ... laaa bank tak boleh terima dokumen ini sebab case ibujarikiri tak ngam tu ... okay
 ~
now driving licence pula ... aduhai ... satu hari dah berurusan ...
barulah terasa impact of this loss ... rasa dah tak larat dah ... so belumlah saya buat buat lagi ...
tunggulah mykad tu siap insyaAllah
~
 ~
Begitulah ... AlhamduLillah ... sangat sangat bersyukur masih ada paspot malaysia tu ...
kebetulan masukkan dalam bag urusan imigresen suami ... and on this same day earlier in the morning Oghang Besar suami saya tu called from Jabatan Pendaftaran to say that he has collected his PR card ... finally AlhamduLillah ...
~
sesekali ... sendu mendatang ... then teringat ... Allah SWT lagilah Maha Tahu yang benda itu saya sayang ... and tetap ia hilang ... He Maha Bijaksana as to why it has to hilang ... so saya mencari makna memuhasabah diri ... alhamduLillah
~
dan setiap sesorang ada sejarah kehilangan ... harta benda ... kasih sayang ... hopefully i can understand better ...

Breast Cancer ...

Assalamualaikum wbt ...

alhamduLillah ... another long day completed today ... scrub kaki ... foot bath lagi ...
done ...
~

and on breast cancer ...
sejak saya menemui tulisan tulisan Prof Hasanah  ... i have a better awareness of this condition and the people affected by it ... it is impossible to claim that one understands ... but the expressed words have enabled me to at least follow the logic (for lack of a better word ... because there is no logic to it ...) of this dis - ease ... that condition of not being at ease ...

a friend who has been afflicted by this, has gone through so many sessions of therapy and surgery and therapy ... yet i could not fathom the inner sense of this affliction and how she deals with it ... because she doesn't express her pain and how she manages her pain in words ...

but at least now i can lead her and others to Prof Hasanah's world ... so that they may take comfort from her words ...AlhamduLillah ... when my own is so very limited ...
AstaghfiruLLAH ...

besides the friend, i met a lady yesterday who recently had a lump removed ... and today another lady who also recently had one breast removed ...  lama berbicara about it with the both them ... resulting in me being so aware of the condition ... the reason for this posting ...

and to them all i said please read the writings of Prof Hasanah ... masyaAllah... siap bagi blog address ... dah sampai hafal AlhamduLillah ...

...

itu saja yang boleh saya bantu ... because hanya yang mengalami, yang memahami ... and has the knowledge of what works, what does not work ...

may Allah SWT give sehat to all ... ameen
