initially i wanted to narrate a most sad event i learnt from the ziarah ... hence the title ... but i remember the happiest event of all that happened on this day ... the birth of our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم

Been awhile since i had my workout in Laman Kecik. But AlhamduLillah the Laman is thriving on its own ... regular rain and occasional watering ... minimal weeding ... syukur AlhamduLillah for both calming and vibrant colours, and heady fragrance for the senses ...

Aster yellow ... aka coreopsis ... most vibrant "chickweeds tickseed?" and favourite bedding of Bujang Senang . I have planted this plant all over the Laman Kecik and Bujang Senang has tried most of them :)

Bujang Senang is a Tom Cat si perempit malam (the night prowler) who has an exceptional preference to sleeping among the Yellow Aster patches i planted all over this small garden ... till now i've no idea where he comes from :)

and this is Kenanga ... it's getting too tall ... i was standing below these branches actually ... will need to prune it soon but i'm dallying ... the kenanga is also known as YlangYlang ... aka Cananga odorata ... the very fragrant "flower of flowers" (its other name :) most soothing and calming ... do you then wonder that many are planted at the gravesides - emanating fragrance to sooth the pain of loss ...

Ekologi hidup ...

Assalamualaikum wbt ...

AlhamduLillah syukur ... that simple routine sometimes leads to surprising understanding ...

 a lot of times in fact ... that is ... when we care to take a moment ... 

to stop ... and to ponder ...

~

i was a science student ... i enjoyed physics and biology ... but not chemistry because i couldn't grasp the mole molar issue in chemistry ... my brain just could not digest it ... but belajar tetaplah kena belajar ...

some memorable moments in school subjects had nothing to do with exam at all ...

contoh this one ...

one day cikgu biology kami took us for a field trip ... dekat je belakang sekolah ada bukit ... a good site for the matter at hand ...

we marked square meter areas and each group had to observe and count the no of plants in their square ... we enjoyed it ... berlawan lawan tengok whose group had more plants in their square ... then you would telek sungguh square tu jangan ada yang tertinggal dalam our count ...

that left a lasting wonder in my mind ... that so many plants could be accommodated in that small square ...

the was of that ... is the is of me ...

simple trip ... simple lesson ... but a life long learning ... of keen observation

and ... thank you Mr Ooi ... although ecology was not part of the exam ...

despite that ... boleh juga terpedaya oleh ni ha ...

serupa tapi tak sama ... siapakah yang berbeza ...

cerita nya ...

periwinkle di laman kecik ni is self sowing ... bila banyak anaknya sana sini because the classic kampung style periwinkle tu memang senang berbenih ... unlike the modern varieties yang kena hujan lebat sikit pun terus terjelepok ...

so anak anak tu saya replant lah kat mana mana tempat kosong to cover the ground ... yang dalam gambar ni sederet ... saya belai belai gembur kan tanah nak letak baja ...

last last perasan ek yang satu ni bukan kamu ... pandai ye dia space kan dirinya beratur kat situ ... daunnya pun hampir serupa ... 

last on the right tu ... weed actually ... sian pula saya nak cabut ... 

so ambil gambar dulu hehe ...

ke (ni or in BM :) ... saya yang tersalah ambil weed among the seedlings tu and replanted it along with the others haha ...

begitulah kehidupan ... dalam ekologi hidup ...

kalau kita tak kenal dan tidak tahu membeza yang real dengan yang tak real ...

maka ter nuture dan ter select pula lah weed leaders ... :)

and yang ini tempat tidur baru bujang senang malam tadi ...

 penyek penyek tu kan ... ni yang belum berbunga sedang subur naiknya and was hoping for it to flower soon to cheer up that part of the area ...

i spot planted ... planting at many spots ... as opposed to massing ... my words je ni ye ... may not be technically horticulturally corrrect hehe ... so that where ever we turn the yellow starry flowers are waving about in our laman kecik ...

so i thought kalau spot tu kecik bujang senang tak hingin lah nak tidur situ ...

tidak juga ...

okay lah  jang ... one night mesti intai juga who is this ... stranger in the night ...

strangers  in the night ... exchanging glances ...

woittt ... tetiba lak hehe ...

apa juga cabaran yang ada walaupun tak tahu kita apa maknanya ...

malam tadi bujang siapa lah yang merempit sampai jauh malam ... tak balik rumah tumpang tidur atas aster kuning ...

sejuk empuk je agaknya tidur situ ye ... 

siap tinggal baunya lagi sebelum pulang ke rumah :)

okay lah juge dia sorang (sekor) je  ... kalau ada kawan rempitnya ... lagi teruk kan ...

nak kena kemas sikit tempat tidur si bujang senang tu ...

ni another one of those from the aster family i think ... rupanya serupa but manja sangat yang ini ... a softie ... nak kena naturalise kat atas tanah ni ... but sebelum tu bagi dia kuat semangat dulu dalam pasu kecik tu ... what we normally refer to as "transition management" in change process ...

yang ni sweet diam diam je duduk kat ceruk tepi dinding ... 

tak banyak permintaan ... 

rather most giving and forgiving walau kita tak peduli ...

warna daun plant ni berubah ubah according to how much sun it is getting ... 

this one has a beautiful mix ... very moist location and very less sun ... brightens up a dull looking area ... since other flowering plants could not flourish in such condition ...

propagation nya pun sangaaat senang ... 

di hujung jari je ... snip snip buat lubang sikit kat tanah tu cucuk kan je dia ... kalau nak tegak lurus tanam satu satu upright ... kalau nak banyak beranak nya ... buat lubang di tanah tu memanjang ... tidurkan je cutting tu atas tanah ... nanti dia tumbuh beratur ... letaklah compost sikit kalau ada ... masyaAllah ... mudah je kan ...

wild ferns and caladium growing naturally in a very very moist area and very very less sun ... 

saya biarkan composition tu harmonise naturally ... just maintain and snip off daun daun mati je ... senang kan ...

  saya suka sangat ni ... but ini lah yang emak kata pada adik adik ... kakmbong bela hutan ... okay lah tu ... hehe ...

this small square has 2 varieties of ferns and 1 variety of caladium ... bawahnya moss atas batu batu kecik ... and i put in aster kuning bawah keladi tu sebelah kanan daunnya baru nak mengintai ... periwinkle kat depan tu kecik kecik lagi ... i hope they can fight the elements and show us that they are "women of substance" ... hehe kut lah ada yang masih ingat that novel "woman of substance" ...

Service ... hati ... and begonia

AlhamduLillah syukur ... seharian mengejar masa trying to complete what needed to be completed ... to the last moment ...

antara pengalaman hari ni di pejabat kerajaan yang satu ni ... ada a few counters ... i was late but an officer right away looked into my requirement ...

meanwhile di belakang kedengaran jelas dan nyata seseorang bercerita rancak tentang dunia di luar tugas ... cerita cerita cerita ... cerita cerita cerita ... tukang dengar tak pula kedengaran respon nya ...

meanwhile ... customers lain were coming ... no one was serving them ... yang sepatut bertugas masih juga rancak bercerita ... cerita cerita cerita ...

rancaknya cerita ...i said to the counter officer ... 

ya lah she said ... can't do much about it ... and some more she is going for hajj ( i think what she meant was for umrah ... she was Chinese and must not have realised the difference) ... but hati tak tukar she sambung ...

ahhh malu nya saya dengar ...

Muharram yang manis ...and weed space

Assalamualaikum wbt ...

AlhamduLillah syukur ... cuaca so charming a morning ... Muharram 1 ...

so ape lagi ... cuti cuti ke laman kecik lah ...

but sebelum tu ... pergi lawat sini dulu ... hehe

hati banyak senang ...
gendong balik 5 plants ... for three different spots having three different microclimates ...

one full sun ... 

one very less sun ... bawah plant lain

one half and half ...

now dah pandai dah :) ... dulu kalau beli ikut hati je ... now i am more aware of what plants will flourish where ... 

so sebelum ke nursery tu dah tau dah for what purpose i am buying ...

so what did i buy ... ni masalah nya ... tau 2 nama je ...

Friday of bless ...and the angel wings

Assalamualaikum wbt ...

AlhamduLillah syukur ... another meet ... another step forward ... and while i'm gone the blog is updating itself :) ... AlhamduLillah ... i love this new found freedom ...

yesterday a dear neighbour across the road gave me a beautiful caladium plant ...

and as i searched for a friday plant ... i came across this ...

the angle wings ... 

fancy leaved caladium ... caladium bicolor ...

not truly an f of friday plant ...

it's amazing because i like them so much and i was wondering how to incorporate the c of caladium plant into my entry ... then i found this ... how apt for a friday too ... when it's also known as the angle wings ...

there's a spot in our laman kecik yang most of the time lembab ...  that part of the laman does not get much sun because of  a wall ...
and i noticed the following establishing themselves naturally ...
ferns ... two varieties of them ... moss and bunga keladi hutan yang banyak dalam kebun getah dulu dulu ...

i let them be and they are giving good natural option that is looking better and better ...

and

underestimate not  the power of moss

Thursday of h ... happy hawaiian

Assalamualaikum wbt ...

AlhamduLillah syukur ... telah dipermudahkan Allah SWT segala urusan semalam ... AlhamduLillah ...

some bila nak get away from the "real" job ... pergi ke dapur ... but some macam saya pergi ke laman ... laman real ke laman di maya ke boleh belaka ...

dua tiga hari ni hujan lebattttt sangat ... so laman kecik banjir kecik lah juga ... the top soil has more or less disappeared ... nak kena replenish nanti tu ... but no ... not yet ... let the weather settles a bit insyaAllah ...

so for now i'll keep updating with happy hunt of plant names yang baru juga saya tahu ... ingat hari tu ikut day by day je nama plant tu ... but mana boleh cover all the alphabet kan ... so today's t will go to h ... nampak sangatlah macam cikgu kanak kanak tadika hehe ... 

okaylah tu ... asalkan ringan kepala :)

biasakan tengok plant ni kat tepi rumah tepi jalan ... but berapa ramai yang kenal betul siapa dia ...

AlhamduliLlah syukur ... dapat kita membezakan haiwan dan manusia 

dengan haiwan boleh saja kita faham yang dia hanya berbuat sesuatu mengikut rasa semula jadinya ... tak payah nak fikir fikir ... 

aku buat ni betul ke tak betul ... 

elok ke tak elok ... 

cantik tak cara aku ni ... 

menyusahkan orang ke aku ni ...

menganiya orang ke aku ni ...

ha haiwan tak fikir macam tu lah kan ...

 itu sebab kalau nak marah kat haiwan macam tak betul je kita ye :)

AlhamduLillah syukur ... for small stars di laman kecik ni ...

ada dua jenis ... satu bunganya yellow ... 

satu lagi bunganya purple ...

dah lama dah kat laman kecik ni ....

bila saya tinggalkan tak tinjau tinjau ... hidup lah mereka among the weeds ... berlumba lumba lah pula the weeds trying to overpower and demolish them ...

but they are true survivors ... bila kemaskan semak semak tu semula ... berseri kembang melentok lentoklah bunganya ... 

yang melentok si bintang kuning tu ... over the curb (kerb) dah ...

yang buat saya merajuk bukan apa ... malam malam kucing jiran buat tempat tidur dia atas kelompok bunga tu ... daun nya soft je empuk je as a bedding agaknya ... pagi pagi tengok semua kemek macam kena pijak je plant tu ...

bintang ungu lurus tegak naturenya ... 

lama tak ambil berat ni baru nak pujuk pujuk belai semula ... yang ini tak sedap buat bedding agaknye ... kucing tak kacau ... :)

asteraceae

more about them here ... and also why they are called bintang ...

kalau tanam in a mass ... (tulis en masse kang tak tau pule saya nak sebut dalam bahasa perancis tu ... loghat je hehe ...) ... memang berseri benar lah laman laman kecik ...

Catecholamines ... and abscisic acid

abscisic acid kan ... yang nak pekse ... eja ... abs ... cis ... ic :)

today let's get to know ...

catecholamines ... 

do i know how to pronounce this? ... haha ... no matter ...

here is a feeler about this hormone ...

When we are angry our body releases hormones called catecholamines. These hormones generate energy. That is why we suddenly feel like we have a burst of renewed strength. Then in turn our adrenal organs begin to work overtime which is why we feel on edge. These adrenal organs will continue working overtime as long as we are thinking about the situation that made us angry in the first place. This is why we can stay angry and on edge from hours to days.

what happened? ... i had some challenge getting baseline data ... and it was not terribly difficult for some entity to release them ... but it has to be difficult for me ... nak buat PhD kan kan ... so kena lah nangis kan ... hehe ...

no no no ... anak abah tak nanges ...  insyaAllah, insyaAllah, insyaAllah no ... ameen ...

rather she would spend her burst of renewed strength into helping the plants in her laman kecik release their abscisic acid (although i like that name gibberellins more)  ... :)

then ... gergaji ... ! ... woittt ganas amattt ...

sambil belai belai lagi ... (sebab tetiba teringat ini ... Hadith No 19)

dalam bahasa biasa proses cantas mencantas ni we call trimming/pruning ...

that will trigger the release of that plant hormone ... abscisic acid

which will promote new lateral branches ... bagi cantik lagi insyaAllah pokok tu ...

so maknanya ... bila kita kena cantas ... kita makin bertambah cantik lah insyaAllah ... :)

hmmm ... ini lah hasil cantasan orang yang terlebih catecholamines tu ...

bunga-bunga dari hujung hujung dahan yang sudah kena gergaji tadi saya simpan dalam air ... not sure how long they will last ...

seterusnya adalah hamba Allah yang satu ni berkata - oleh kerana kepercumaan (istilah saya je tetapi begitulah maksudnya) itu, makanya kualiti pendidikan tersebut mungkin tidak setaraf mana ... apa maksudnya ... diri yang berkata tu je lah  faham ... masalahnya diri yang berkata tu perkataannya diambilkira pihak university ... maka mereka pun decidelah ... dah kalau percuma tu orang beranggapan kurang kualiti ... maka kita charge jelah mereka mereka ni ...

begitulah ceritanya ...

maka bagi saya ... satu saja ... 

kenapa payah sangat nak sebut AlhamduLillah bila menerima sesuatu pemberian ...

berganda-ganda lagilah yang akan diterima ...

insyaAllah ...

asalnya tumbuh meliar dibenua bawah angin tu ... Allah SWT bagi free je asalnya ... but now semua ada commercial value ...

belum pula pernah nampak di nursery around here ...

AlhamduLillah for laman kecik ... we can take our sweet time to sculp and play with it ... at least that's what i do ... menung menung depan tanah tu ... 

for instance ...

tanah ni basah kurang sun ... what is best here

tanah ni pula keras berbatu ... what to do here

tanah ni plenty of sun ... siapa suka kat sini

with children like my niece Tina who is dyslexic ... perbincangan begini sangatlah suka dia ... nothing formal ... even how to pull a piece of weed pun can turn into an exciting conversation about plant and its root system ... i love the challenge of understanding weeds ... their root systems and how they support each other for survival ...

Seriously ...

Assalamualaikum wbt ...

Alhamdulillah syukur ... sweating out for the past two weekends ...

no no no ... not jogging mogging by the lakeside ... which i wanted to but he said no lah ...

actually that was a good decision because we ended up clearing that semak that we used to call laman ...

alhamduLillah ... done ... sakit pinggang sakit tapak kaki ... tapak kaki rasa tebal sakit semacam ... tapak tangan apa lagi ... but biasa dah kecik kecik dulu pun mencangkul merumput bagai dalam sawah ...so tak hal kan ...

selalunya dah mengada sikit ni berglove lah ... nak kurangkan sakit tangan ... but glove dah habis rosak ... and to get new ones would have meant delay of the job ... and i am not the one to delay bila semangat berkobar-kobar ...

main main kat laman ni bagus ... walau tangan badan baju comot ... otak tak comot ... ada je idea pusing pusing dalam kepala ... i regularly talked out analysis dalam kepala ... concepts and lines and paragraphs ... sampai kadang kadang terbe-cakap sendiri hehe ... i will stop myself when this happens ... jangan sampai ada yang salah sangka haha...

i think this was what happened one day when a neighbour melaporkan kepada saya yang sorang neighbour lagi tu cakap ... akak tu bercakap dengan bunga dia hahaha ... 

mengintai yo kojo kau yo :)

anyway ... my co-supervisor encourages me to ... cakap and write ... meaning write it as you talk to yourself ...

 talking to yourself helps to clarify ideas ... 

but as i have said earlier jangan buat depan orang je ...

now with the laman dah clear ... nampak kosong lah kan ... so ada alasan lah kita ke nursery jamu mata :) ... jamu lebih - beli sikit je ... what with the US government shutdown tu ... kita kat sini pun pandai pandai lah bawa diri ... dunia semakin sempit ... tempias semakin kerap ...

bunga lama ada lah sikit surviving in the jungle of weeds ... i like these kinds of survivors ... so i keep on transplanting them ...

2 conferences concurrently two days before departure ... tengok macam mana insyaAllah usahakan juga ... may Allah SWT ease ... ameen.
