Complexity and abstraction ...

Thinking online ...

~
First ...

Strauss in thought:

"Also, at my intellectual core perhaps is the sense that - however naive you think this - the world of social phenomena is bafflingly complex. Complexity has fascinated and puzzled me much of my life. How to unravel some of the complexity, to order it, not to be dismayed or defeated by it?
How not to avoid the complexity nor distort interpretation of it by oversimplifying it out of existence?
This is of course, an old problem: Abstraction (theory) inevitably simplifies,
yet to comprehend deeply,
to order,
some degree of abstraction is necessary.
How to keep a balance between distortion and conceptualization?"
(Strauss, 1993, p.12)

Second ...

Real in interpretation:

In other words, we need to keep a balance between complexity and conceptualisation. Whilst a phenomenon that we looked at may be complex, we need to explain them to the real world in simpler terms, through the process of abstraction or conceptualisation. It is inevitable that when abstracted, we loose or omit details which contribute to the complexity of the phenomenon (Real, 2013).

~

extract from the book ...

Ali never retaliated against any of his tormentors, I suppose partly because he could never catch them with that twisted leg dragging behind him. But mostly because Ali was immune to the insults of his assailants; he had found his joy, his antidote, the moment Sanaubar had given birth to Hassan. It had been asimple enough affair. No obstetricians, no anesthesiologists, no fancy monitoring devices. Just Sanaubar lying on a stained, naked mattress with Ali and a midwife helping her. She hadn't needed much help at all, because, even inbirth, Hassan was true to his nature:

He was incapable of hurting anyone. A few grunts, a couple of pushes, and outcame Hassan. Out he came smiling.

As confided to a neighbor's servant by the garrulous midwife, who had then in turn told anyone who would listen, Sanaubar had taken one glance at the baby in Ali's arms, seen the cleft lip, and barked a bitter laughter.

"There, " she had said. "Now you have your own idiot child to do all your smiling for you!" She had refused to even hold Hassan, and just five days later, she was gone.

how to make a Calder mobile (pronounced as mobil) ...

~
Mobile in Early Years

A 4-month-old is delighted by the visual stimulus of a mobile suspended in the crib directly over his tummy or feet.  How he stares at the interesting, colorful objects safely attached to the hanging mobile!  His legs start to kick.  His whole body mobilizes as those swinging objects present an attractive visual display.  At 4 months the baby can keep kicking for over 20 minutes in order to keep those mobile hangings making interesting visual patterns in the air.
